Brazil’s previous president, Jair Bolsonaro, has received a 27-year prison sentence for his involvement in plotting a coup and allegedly colluding with foreign entities to challenge the election results. Despite ongoing appeals, he has been ordered by the supreme court to commence his sentence. Bolsonaro, who had briefly resided in Florida but returned to Brazil to face the charges, will be confined to a 12 square meter cell in Brasilia. Supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes instructed his immediate imprisonment following a police raid on his home, where he tampered with his ankle monitor in an attempt to escape.
