Brazil’s Supreme Court issued a ruling on Tuesday that instructed former President Jair Bolsonaro to commence his 27-year prison term for his failed coup attempt post the 2022 re-election defeat. Justice Alexandre de Moraes declared that the right-wing politician had exhausted all appeals and would be incarcerated in Brasilia, where he has been in custody since Saturday to prevent him from fleeing, as per the BBC. This decision marks a significant turn of events for Bolsonaro, who was the leader of Latin America’s most populous country and the first former president found guilty of trying to overthrow democracy. In September, Brazil’s highest court convicted Bolsonaro, 70, on five charges linked to the coup that involved his supporters raiding government buildings following Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in 2022.
