SAO PAULO (AP) — A Brazilian judge on Saturday issued house arrest orders for 10 individuals who were convicted and sentenced for their roles in a scheme to maintain former President Jair Bolsonaro in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election. The decision by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes was made shortly after a former police commander convicted in the plot was arrested in Paraguay and extradited back to Brazil. Silvinei Vasques, the ex-director of Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, tried to flee to El Salvador from Paraguay using forged Paraguayan papers but was apprehended and returned to Brazil. Vasques had removed his ankle monitor and driven to Paraguay in a rental car.
