Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro underwent a phrenic nerve block procedure on Saturday to address his persistent hiccups, as reported by his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, on social media. The medical team revealed that they blocked his right phrenic nerve and have scheduled another procedure in 48 hours to block the left one. The phrenic nerve, crucial for controlling the diaphragm and breathing, has been at the core of Bolsonaro’s health struggles for nine months, causing daily hiccups, according to Michelle Bolsonaro. The successful procedure brought some relief to Bolsonaro, who had been admitted to the hospital for hernia surgery earlier in the week. Despite facing legal issues and a 27-year prison sentence, Bolsonaro received temporary authorization to leave prison for medical treatment, as declared by supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes. Expressing support for his son’s future presidential bid, Bolsonaro plans to resume his sentence at a federal police jail in the capital. Since surviving a stabbing incident during his 2018 presidential campaign, Bolsonaro has endured several abdominal surgeries, impacting his overall health.
