Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned, recently underwent a medical procedure for persistent hiccups for the second time in three days. The doctors performed a “phrenic nerve block procedure” to address the issue by blocking his left phrenic nerve, following a surgery that targeted the right one conducted on Saturday. Described as a crucial nerve that controls the diaphragm, the primary breathing muscle, the phrenic nerve plays a vital role in respiratory function. Bolsonaro’s surgery took place at the DF Star hospital in Brasilia and lasted approximately an hour, as confirmed by his wife, former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, via social media. Dr. Claudio Birolini announced that, if his recovery progresses smoothly, Bolsonaro is expected to be discharged on January 1. Another doctor stated that his health will be closely monitored over the next 48 hours to ensure a proper recovery. Dr. Brasil Caiado expressed optimism about Bolsonaro’s condition, mentioning that he believes the hospitalization will not be prolonged. Bolsonaro, aged 70, had been hospitalized on Christmas Day for a hernia surgery and subsequently underwent additional procedures to address his hiccups during his stay. These health issues stem from a stabbing incident he experienced during a campaign event in September 2018, in Minas Gerais state. In September, Bolsonaro was sentenced to over 27 years in prison by Brazil’s Supreme Court for attempting to overturn his 2022 election loss through a coup. He began serving his sentence last month and received authorization from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to leave prison for the hernia surgery.
