Brazil’s Supreme Court has dismissed the petition of former president Jair Bolsonaro to have his prison sentence converted to house arrest on the grounds of health issues related to a recent surgery. Bolsonaro, 70, had been hospitalized for over a week due to a groin hernia operation and persistent hiccups. His lawyers argued for house arrest due to a ‘real risk of sudden deterioration’ in his health. However, the court ruled against the request, stating that there was no evidence of a decline in Bolsonaro’s condition. Despite the setback, Bolsonaro is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon and will return to the federal police facility where he is serving his 27-year sentence.
