Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s visit to India for the ongoing AI Impact Summit, followed by a full-fledged state visit, signifies a deliberate move by the two largest democracies of the Global South to enhance ties into a deeper economic and strategic partnership. Dr. Anit Mukherjee, a senior US-based economist specializing in India-Brazil relations, emphasized the importance of Lula’s visit. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Rio de Janeiro for the BRICS summit last year was followed by a state visit, showcasing the growing cooperation between the two nations. Lula’s delegation includes 14 ministers and 150 business leaders, indicating a shift towards a more robust partnership in trade, investment, manufacturing, services, and other areas. Historically, the Brazil-India relationship was not very strong, but it saw a significant change in the early 2000s when President Lula came to power with a vision to unite developing countries like Brazil, India, and South Africa.
