Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was transferred to a semi-intensive care unit after showing signs of improvement, as reported by his wife Michelle Bolsonaro on Monday. Jair Bolsonaro had been under intensive care for pneumonia at a Brasilia hospital since Friday.
Since he was admitted to the hospital on Friday due to pneumonia, the 70-year-old right-wing politician’s health has been gradually improving. Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, was previously in intensive care before being moved to the semi-intensive care unit.
The hospital DF Star explained that besides the improvement in his medical condition, Bolsonaro’s kidney function had also gotten better. He was initially taken to the hospital from prison, where he is serving a 27-year sentence for a coup attempt in 2023.
Jair Bolsonaro’s family and allies have been advocating for him to serve his sentence under house arrest rather than in prison. His son Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator, is expected to run for president this year, potentially against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Michelle Bolsonaro remained optimistic, stating, "We remain confident he will overcome this moment too," in her Instagram post. Bolsonaro has faced health issues since being stabbed during a campaign event in 2018.
The former Brazilian president has faced serious charges, including leading a criminal organization and attempting to abolish the democratic rule of law. However, Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing related to these accusations.
Jair Bolsonaro’s transfer to the semi-intensive care unit marks a positive development in his health status. He has been in the spotlight due to both his health issues and legal troubles, making him a polarizing figure in Brazil’s political landscape.
As the country awaits further updates on Bolsonaro’s health, the potential political implications of his son’s presidential candidacy and the ongoing legal battles will continue to shape the narrative surrounding the controversial former leader.
