BRASILIA, Jan 22 – Brazil’s Finance Minister Fernando Haddad expressed his desire for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to name his executive secretary, Dario Durigan, as his successor when he leaves his post in the next few weeks, according to two sources. The possibility of Rogerio Ceron, the current Treasury secretary, assuming Durigan’s position is under consideration by Haddad, signaling continuity in the ministry’s leadership. The sources, speaking anonymously due to the confidential nature of the plans pending Lula’s approval, also mentioned ongoing discussions about the future head of the Treasury. The finance ministry declined to provide any comments on the matter. Haddad previously stated his intention to resign before the end of January, although an exact departure date has not been announced. One potential delay factor could be a planned trip to India with Lula from February 19–21, pending confirmation from the presidential palace. Durigan, responsible for coordinating different areas within the ministry, has been pivotal in negotiations with Congress on economic matters and has built a strong relationship with Lula. Haddad mentioned his post-ministry plans to assist in Lula’s reelection campaign, although his party allies also see him as a potential Senate candidate or gubernatorial candidate for São Paulo. Discussions have started between Haddad and Lula about his role in the upcoming general elections, but a final agreement has not been reached yet. REUTERS
