Jair Bolsonaro, former president of Brazil, was detained on November 22 after the Supreme Court accused him of trying to break his ankle bracelet and plot an escape. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison for a scheme to prevent leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office after the 2022 elections, a ruling he is currently appealing. Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes stated that Bolsonaro’s detention was a preventive measure due to his high flight risk as final appeals are ongoing. Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, had been under house arrest in an upscale condominium in Brasilia since August. Judge Moraes also mentioned the risk of Bolsonaro seeking political asylum due to the proximity of his home to the US embassy.
