Brazil’s Senate approved a bill to cut the prison term of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who was found guilty of planning a coup after losing the re-election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The bill, previously passed by the lower chamber, awaits Lula’s expected veto that could potentially be overturned by Congress. Bolsonaro, currently serving a 27-year sentence since November, would have had to spend at least eight years in confinement before being eligible for a more lenient system according to the previous rules. With the new legislation altering how certain crimes are penalized, Bolsonaro might end up serving just over two years in jail. After extensive lobbying by Bolsonaro’s backers in Congress for amnesty, the bill surprisingly advanced swiftly through both the conservative-dominated lower chamber and the more evenly balanced Senate.
