SAO PAULO, Feb 20 – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Friday that former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro should face trial in his own country, not overseas. Maduro was captured from Caracas by U.S. forces earlier this year and taken to New York, where he is accused of overseeing a cocaine-trafficking network with international drug cartels. Lula emphasized the importance of re-establishing democracy in Venezuela and stressed that if Maduro were to stand trial, it should be within Venezuela’s borders. During an interview with India Today TV at the country’s AI summit, Lula expressed his belief in this stance. Lula also highlighted that Brazil could not condone one head of state capturing another and conveyed his intentions to present a proposal to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Brazilian citizens accused of crimes living in the United States being tried in their home country. He discussed negotiating organized crime, drug trafficking, and rare earth minerals with Trump during a potential upcoming meeting in Washington.
