Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced in a YouTube video his intention to advocate for a ban on digital casinos to tackle online gambling addiction and safeguard families from the financial burdens associated with internet betting.

Lula sees the expansion of digital gambling as a concerning trend, particularly due to its economic and social impacts on women. Even though physical casinos have long been prohibited in Brazil, the accessibility of these platforms through mobile phones and apps has grown significantly.

The president expressed his concerns about the effect of gambling addiction on families, highlighting how this issue disproportionately affects women and jeopardizes crucial expenses for households.

During his Women’s Day message, Lula emphasized the need for a joint effort among the government, Congress, and the judiciary to regulate and restrict the operation of digital betting platforms in Brazil.

Lula focused not only on gambling but also addressed gender violence issues, highlighting initiatives to combat violence against women. He outlined new measures to combat femicide, improve protection for victims, and enhance enforcement against aggressors.

The Brazilian government’s efforts to address the betting market also include actions against illegal operations, such as money laundering. Cooperation with industry players and technology providers is key to combating these illicit activities.

Regulatory measures will aim for greater transparency in sector data, reviewing financial regulations for illegal operators, and setting new guidelines for technology providers linked to the betting market in upcoming years.
