Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to begin serving a 27-year prison sentence. The ruling follows his conviction for attempting to cling to power after losing the 2022 election. The court on Tuesday rejected an appeal from Bolsonaro’s lawyers challenging the sentence and ordered him to serve his time at a federal police facility in Brasília, where he is already in custody. Bolsonaro was arrested on Saturday after the police reported that he had interfered with the ankle monitor while under house arrest. He claimed his medications caused ‘hallucinations’ and ‘paranoia,’ and expressed concerns that the monitor could be used for surveillance purposes.
