Scientists in Brazil recently observed a jaguar swimming over a kilometer to visit an isolated island within the reservoir area of the Serra da Mesa Hydroelectric Power Dam in Goiás State. This surprising behavior challenges the belief that dams act as absolute barriers to large carnivores, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of jaguars. The same jaguar had been spotted on the mainland 2.48 km away from the island in a previous sighting in 2020. The observations were made using camera-trap stations strategically placed on the mainland and the island as part of an ongoing jaguar survey. The jaguar’s identity was confirmed through spot-pattern analysis, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts to protect these majestic animals.
