Jair Bolsonaro, the disgraced former Brazilian president currently incarcerated for his involvement in a coup plot, is the subject of an upcoming biopic. Jim Caviezel, famous for portraying Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, is reportedly secretly filming a ‘heroic’ portrayal of the right-wing politician. The film, titled Dark Horse and directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh, is being written by Mário Frias, who previously served as Bolsonaro’s secretary of culture. Production began three months ago in Brazil, the country where Bolsonaro held office from 2019 to 2023. In September 2025, Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison for his role in a criminal conspiracy aimed at preventing his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from assuming power. Despite denials from his supporters, the prosecution has drawn comparisons to the ‘lawfare’ faced by Donald Trump before his re-election.
